Leather Dog Beds
11 Dec 2007

The purpose of this article is to highlight the advantages of orthopedic dog beds for canines experiencing pain from arthritis, stiff joints, pressure injury, hip dysplasia and general old age.

Dogs are not inclined to complain about trivial items such as temperature, comfort and mild pain.  Much like a child, often the only indication of a problem is subtle changes in actions or demeanor that are picked up by perceptive owners.  One of the most common causes of canine pain or discomfort can be traced back to sleeping conditions.

It makes perfect sense when you consider that although Fido would be happy to sleep on a pile of clothing, you should consider what your body would feel like if you slept on that same pile of clothing for a week.  Worse yet, hardwood floors, concrete floors and even tile and linoleum.  Just because a dog will sleep anywhere that is big enough to lie down on does not mean that this is good for him.  Far from it.

An orthopedic dog bed is essentially an especially comfortable bed for your pet which provides a comfortable, supportive sleeping environment.  The difference in your pet's ability to get restful, recuperative sleep and relieve joint pressure in a good quality bed compared to sleeping on the floor is drastic.  The proof is in the pudding, and will be especially noticeable in older dogs with pain and mobility issues, that a good dog bed will drastically increase the quality of your dog's life.

Studies show that nearly one in four adult dogs experience arthritis pain so it is clear that this is a serious concern for all pet owners who treat their dog like a family member.  Dogs are living longer and getting less exercise these days which has caused the increase in old age related illnesses.  Other than medication, a quality dog bed is the most prescribed treatment for elderly, injured and large breed dogs.

There are a few important factors to consider when looking for a dog bed for your pet:

-Bed should be soft, but supportive and big enough to accommodate the pet with room to turn around

-Stain, dust and moisture resistant, durable material is recommended

-Choose a material that will not hold smells and odor like memory foam will

-Good quality does not mean $14.99 in the discount bin at your local discount pet superstore

Choose a dog bed based on comfort value.  If you can imagine yourself sleeping in the bed, which one would you choose?  Finding a superior quality dog bed that is large, durable, stain resistant and supportive can be somewhat difficult, but you can bet that your dog will thank you!
