Choosing the Right Dog Collar

10 May 2010

People with dogs more often than not ensure that their dog has a collar. You should however not just get any dog collar but the right one. The type of collar that you get for your dog will depend on the type of dog in question and what the collar is going to be used for. Collars are available in a lot of sizes. They can also be bought in different styles.

The aim of dog collars are simple-that of controlling your dog. With a dog leash attached to your dog collar, you will be able to take walks when you want and still be able to control your dog. Because the collar will be such an important part of your dog's wardrobe it is important that you pay attention several factors.

Obviously the size of the collar matters. If your dog collar is too small, you stand the risk of choking your dog. Not a pleasant or nice thing to do. It is advised that you check to ensure that the collar can easily rotate but not slip over the dogs ears. A good measuring guide is to ensure that at least two of your fingers can be fit into the slack around the dog's throat. You should however avoid making the collar too large because, most dogs will quickly figure out a way to slip out of their collar if they are given half the chance. Depending on what type of dog you have, you should also pay attention to the strength and tone of the collar fabric. Since you will be attaching a leash to the collar from time to time, you should ensure that the collar is strong enough. A Labrador for instance will require sterner stuff in the way of a collar than a Chihuahua.

Personalized Dog Collar and Rhinestone Dog Collar

Another important area of use in dog collars, is the option of personalization. With a personalized dog collar, you will be able to include the details of your dog's identity. You will be able to add your dog's name and your contact information. You can also decide to add his favorite meal on the collar if you so desire. And if your dog gets lost, all this will be very important. Collars can be further personalized with fashion elements. For example, most shops offer dog collars in more than one color, giving you the option of using something fresh each day.
