Hair is thinning and pets are scratching and biting themselves frantically. What's the problem? Ticks and fleas have infested them. This is misery to your pets and it's up to us humans to take care of the problem. This is easier said than done.
To get rid of an infestation of fleas and/or ticks takes a three step process:
First, you have to treat the inside of your home and your garage. This includes daily vacuuming for awhile, washing all the pet beds, treating the pet strollers, dog crates, dog carriers, cat carriers and anything else your pets use. Then put down a flea and tick carpet powder to kill any remaining flea eggs and larvae that are most likely in your carpet. Or you may want to use a room fogger. Of course, keep your pets outside during this process and make sure to check with your vet for product recommendations.
Second, treat your pets. You can use collars, sprays, monthly applications or get them dipped. You absolutely need to discuss the best options with your veterinarian first as there are some products that are fine for dogs that aren't good for cats. Now your pets can come inside and have to stay inside until step three is completed.
Third, treat the outside. This means your patio or lanai if you have one, as well as your yard, dog pens and dog houses. Stir up any standing leaves or debris before your treat your yard as fleas and ticks like moist, shady areas. Use a product that's environmentally safe. Best to check with your vet here as well on product selection.
So, as you can see, it's not as easy to accomplish as one might think. Keeping our homes and yards treated on a regular basis should minimize any flea and/or tick infestation and give our loving pets much more comfort.
